Today's comic used the style of Underground Comix, just as they were dying. Very often, comics will jump on a bandwagon for a fad, AFTER the fad has already disappeared. A few examples:
The Disco Dazzler. By the time she came out, disco was dead, so they revamped her into the Dazzler, and dropped all the tie-ins planned for the character.
The 3D Man. Designed to match a revival of the 3D movie fad, but hearkened back to the original one. Lasted about as long as the new 3D movie fad lasted.
The original Teen Titans. Did the fads they were trying to follow ever exist in our reality? _________________ Bart Lidofsky |

U.S.-1 - Too late to cash in on the CB craze.
Superman - After his "death" he returned with a mullet. And since it made him resemble Michael Landon he was doubly out of fashion.
Justice League Detroit featured a break dancer. _________________ Mike Kuypers

| The Silver Surfer. Great character, but the whole surfer craze was way over by the time he showed up. |

| How about DC's Bomba? I suppose the Johnny Sheffield Bomba movies were broadcast in lots of cities on Saturday afternoon tv (although I don't recall them airing in Memphis), but the movies were already over 10 years old in 1967 when DC tried to make a go of a new jungle hero comic book based on the property. That was the last of new "jungle" comics for a good long while...when they did return (discounting reprint series like Marvel's original Jungle Action), they were as much superhero comics as jungle books. |

In these days of constantly missed deadlines, what about comic book media tie-ins that miss their tie-in dates?
The first part of DC's two-issue adaptation of Snakes On A Plane (which missed its original ship date) came out weeks after the movie had come and gone in theatres --- with the second issue following a week or two after that. And that's in addition to the movie itself, which had already missed the boat of its own publicity machine. All the hype had peaked months before the release of the film. _________________ Your imaginary friend,

Green Lantern became a CB talking trucker long after the cb craze had died
Claypool's ELVIRA COMIC WAS GOOD, BUT CAME YEARS AFTER THE CHARACTER WAS BIG (OK, MAKE THAT REALLY POPULAR) |
