Supposedly from an interview with Gov. Sarah Palin that was printed in an Alaskan newspaper:

"God made dinosaurs 4,000 years ago as ultimately flawed creatures, lizards of Satan really, so when they died and became petroleum products we, made in His perfect image, could use them in our pickup trucks, snow machines and fishing boats."

"LIZARDS OF SATAN"!?!

There's a funnybook title or band name just waiting to happen!

Oh, wait...Jack Kirby already came up with a comic based on this concept:

DEVIL DINOSAUR!

Aloha,

Scott!

Scott!,

These quotes are actually fictional --- they're from the amusing TUBOB blog (http://unbearablebobness.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/08/governor-sarah-palin-quotes.html). But they're certainly outrageous enough for them actually to have come from her mouth!

"Lizards of Satan" would indeed be a great name for a band --- though the best band name I've heard recently is "Hookers and Blow," a Minneapolis band that performed last Sunday at a party sponsored by the National Rifle Association, Lockheed Martin, and the American Trucking Associations for attendees of, um, the Republican National Convention! Talk about your family values... Shocked

Cheers,
Roger

Man, don't scare me like that, Scott! The idea that our possible next Vice President might have beliefs like that is frightening! Confused

Hell, we've had eight years of a president that thinks along those lines.

There was a news bit on Saturday Night Live where some christian fundamentalist called dinos "Jesus Horses"

I am very tired of all the anger, hatred, and name-calling in this country ... and have no desire to start a fight here ... but Rule 7 of the Oddball Comics Forum says: "We discuss a wide variety of Oddball topics here, but politics, religion and social controversies are not generally among them."

This certainly falls into that category, and several of the comments made here are personally offensive to me.

Sorry, Nate. No offense intended. But like many of my commentaries about comics with a religious subject matter, it's not the message, it's the Oddball way it's delivered that I was reacting to. My comments were not about evangelical Christianity, but instead about the absurd phrase 'lizards of Satan", its cultural implications and its similarity to Devil Dinosaur.

And -- as Roger notes -- Sarah Palin never even said the bogus quote, so it must have been intended to be funny in the first place.

Plus, since I love dinosaurs (due, in no small part, to all the wacky Oddball Comics that have featured them) I was immediately drawn to this quote, real or phony.

At least I thought/think it's funny. (I always thought that the title of Robert E. Howard's "Pigeons From Hell" was funny, too, and that was a very scary story!) But then, I am devoid of any religious beliefs, so it's pretty hard to offend me on such matters. (On the matter of politics, well, I can't say I really trust ANY politician, so I'm offended by practically everything they utter!)

Again, I'm sincerely sorry, Nate (and Jim and Jeff and Jim MacQ and any other Oddball Christians who are regulars here).

Aloha,

Scott!

Not to mention those of us who are technically atheists, but support the rights of those who believe in religions as long as they don't believe in human sacrifice, particularly of those who are technically atheists.

Thanks, Bart --- that cracked me up! Very Happy

Cheers,

Just for the record, not all Christian sects believe in that "Dinosaurs are 4000 years old" idea; that's based on somebody's interpretation of the scriptures (as are various other concepts also taken from the Bible.)

In any case, I meant my comment as a joke, with no desire to offend anyone.

Thank you ... all gracious apologies accepted ... and how totally refreshing to be a part of an internet forum where folks are so quick to say they're sorry ... Wow! Surprised

As with all management, these sorts of things filter from the top down ... so it's a very positive reflection on you, Scott! Very Happy

Nate

Can we take up a collection to get Matt Damon a sense of humor? When I first saw his AP interview and he mentioned the dinosaur thing, I was wondering where the heck it came from.
