Scott! has (inadvertently) started a thread on his Facebook wall (oh dear, there's no link. I guess you'll have to make comments here, instead) about favorite cartoon superhero show openings.

What do you think are the best, worst, and most oddball superhero cartoon show openings (we can take a loose definition of superhero, although Deputy Dawg would be pushing it).

I'm going to wait a bit before putting my own up.

I assume we're going with American animated shows.

Best: JOHNNY QUEST -- great music, fast cutting, lots of iconic images

Worst: THE LITTLE CLOWNS OF HAPPY TOWN -- because it was THE LITTLE CLOWNS OF HAPPY TOWN

Oddest: HOPPITY HOOPER interstitials -- weird, heavily stylized almost to the point of being abstract; stranger than the ROCKY & BULLWINKLE interstitial titles

Anime: RANMA 1/2 Season ??? -- I forget which season had this opening, but it consisted of an elaborate flow chart to make all the character relationships clear

Buzz: Love that classic Johnny Quest opening, but he's no super hero- no powers, no costume. Unless you count Hadji. Same for Hooper. Can't comment on the Little Clowns, never seen it.

(You can make a case for Ranma, though: ridiculously powerful martial arts, "secret identity" as a girl, lots of fights.)

My choices:

-Best: TEEN TITANS! They even had a Japanese version of the theme for the more oddball episodes! Very Happy

-Worst: The Rippin' Friends Just... ugh.

-Oddest: Probably Freakazoid (he's shown as a fricasseed turkey in it! Of course it was intentional. Razz )

I guess non-American shows that have been aired in America can be included (although Japanime tends to have theme songs that sound like wedding music). To Sijo: I think Johnny Quest on the loose definition. Oh, by the way...

Wow, you haven't seen much anime, have you, Bart? There's a whole spectrum of music there, wider than in American cartoons I'd dare to say. Admittedly, most Anime shows brought to America tend to have Pop-Idol music (is that what you meant by "wedding" music?) My personal favorite are the Naruto openings, which get new songs every season and are always visually catchy.

And here's some trivia for you: the opening of the Latino version of Johnny Quest actually has a narrator saying the characters' names out loud! Why? Beats me, it isn't like any of them are written differently in Spanish (except Bandit, that would be Bandido.)

Best: Frankenstein JUnior and the Impossibles. Great music, narration and animation
Worst: MIghty Hercules
Oddest: Spider-Man, with the catchy yet weird theme song about his radioactive blood
Favourite: Colonel Bleep. STAND BY FOR ADVENTURE!

Some of my own:

Show with the best combination of opening and closing:

The Marvel Super Heroes Show (Grantray-Lawrence)

Best closing theme: Fireball XL5.

Oddballable mention: Superman Aquaman Adventure Hour

And bad, bad, bad: Super President

Re: The Spanish opening of Johnny Quest, it occurs to me now that maybe the translators were worried that the target audience (Latino children) would not know how to pronounce their names. Fair enough, except... all they had to do was WAIT A FEW MINUTES until the show started and they would find out! This was never done with any other show's credits, so why was it done with JQ? Question

Best: Second Season Iron Man. Tony stripped to waist in front of an anvil with hammer in hand. Brings it down with a loud clang and the original armor appears in the background; second clang, the older gold and red armor appears, third clang and the most updated suit is visible. Then pulls a chain that pours melted metal from a hanging bucket into a mold. The Iron Man armor is revealed when the mold separates. Very visual, exciting, and more or less tells the viewer who, what, how, and why without dialogue.

also:
Astro Boy b/w series

Batman TAS

The Lone Ranger (1967 version)

Although Tonto's scripting was kind of weird; sort of a combination of his simplified English and late 60's slang: "We must let bird go. Bird must do own thing." type of stuff.

Trivia: Tonto's lack of fluent English, at least according to the story line, had less to do with his ignorance or lack of intelligence, and more to do with that he spoke several dozen languages, and used simplified grammar to keep things straight.

"Several dozen languages?" That sounds more like a cop-out answer to me, and quite a flimsy one. Though to be fair Tonto was always shown as the wiser of the two (which I guess makes the Ranger HIS sidekick, not that most White Men would guess Wink ) I even read once that he was only *pretending* not to speak English well. But DOZENS of languages? Please.

More Tonto Trivia:
-Since his name means "Fool" in Spanish, they changed his name to "Toro" (bull) in the translations.

-There are rumors that Johnny Deep is being sought to play the part in the next Lone Ranger movie. Well, he DOES have some Native American blood...

Hmmmm.... so many choices.

BEST: Mighty Orbots. (Although Cybersix, SWATKats season 2 and Galaxy Rangers are definite contenders.)

WORST: Since the Ripping Friends was already mentioned....

ODDEST: The 90's Iron Man opening, where Stark is working on a old school forge with a copyright-sanitized version of the Black Sabbath song playing. Had the animation been of better quality this would have been totally awesome!
