Mark Evanier in his column posted a piece from an abbreviated version of The Mikado with Groucho Marx playing Ko-Ko. He is, of course, almost perfect for the role; Margaret Dumont would have made a great Katisha. And Chico would have been perfect for Pooh-Bah.
But who would Harpo play? Zeppo could probably have done the Mikado (who only has one song and only appears in the 2nd Act). Any standard romatic leads could play Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum.
And what other noted plays would have worked with the Marx Brothers? _________________ Bart Lidofsky |

About 20 years ago A&E ran a Canadian production of THE MIKADO which used stage hands dressed in black ala noh drama.
Harpo would be one such stage hand, constantly interrupting things and causing trouble. _________________ www.SnokieStories.com
